Interested in helping us preserve our 1932 fishtug?
We're seeking community members willing to help keep it looking beautiful for another 100 years.
Meet at the Port Dover Harbour Museum Friday March 22 at 5pm for more information. We're looking for individuals of all skill sets and experience.
Built in 1932 by George Gamble, it was one of the first Lake Erie fish tugs with an electrically-welded hull.
Metal-hulled fishing boats were revolutionary. Steel is lighter, stronger and more durable than wood. The steel-hulled advance coincided with the arrival of powerful diesel motors, which displaced steam power.
Welding was an improvement over the riveted hulls that went before.
As for the name Almidart, it is a contraction of the names of the three partners who owned it – Alf Schubert, Midland Thompson and Art Anderson.
The Almidart is 60 feet long and 15 in the beam.
A crane was used to lift it from the muddy banks of Black Creek about 20 years ago and cart it to its current location. Given that it is one of the first things visitors see when they cross the lift bridge into Port Dover, it’s an attraction and a landmark.
