DTMHC – Multicultural School Program: Delhi’s Living Heritage

Delhi’s Living Heritage Program is a curriculum-based education program designed to introduce Grade 4, 5 and 6 students to the rich and diverse multicultural heritage of the Delhi area. This program provides youth with an opportunity to learn about and participate in traditional, hands-on activities based on these cultures. Teachers can choose either a half-day or a full day program.

Due to the availability of staff and volunteers, school programs are typically scheduled only on Tuesdays. Exceptions may be made on rare occasions.

Half-Day Program

Program Duration: 2 hours (approx. 9:30am to 11:30am)
Maximum Group Size: 30
Required Supervision Ratio: 1 adult per 5 children. Due to space limitations, we request that schools do not exceed this ratio.
Cost: $6.35/student (Teachers, EAs & Chaperones attend free of charge)
Payment: Program fees are based on the number of students at the time of booking; fees will not be adjusted for students who are sick or unable to attend on the day of the program as supplies have to be purchased and prepared in advance. The program can be paid for on the day of delivery. We accept payment by cash, credit cards, debit or cheque (made payable to Norfolk County).

Program Description:

Our half-day school program consists of two 45-minute activities – one featuring traditional foods, the other celebrating folk art and/or crafts.

Teachers are invited to choose 1 food-based activity from the following list:

  • Crêpes (France)
  • Lukken Cookies (Belgium)
  • Welsh Cakes (Wales)
  • Csiga Noodles (Hungary)

For each of these baking activities, students will learn a brief history of the food and its relation to its country of origin. They will then have the opportunity to make and taste the food they have prepared.

Please note: The food activity options may occasionally be limited by the availability of museum staff and/or volunteers.

Allergy note: The Delhi Tobacco Museum & Heritage Centre is a public facility and is therefore NOT a peanut-free environment. If you have any allergy concerns about this program, please raise them with museum Curator, Andrew Moore, at the time of booking.

Teachers are invited to choose 1 folk art activity from the following list:

  • Floral Embroidery (Hungary)
  • Islamic Tiles/Portuguese Azulejos (Middle East, North Africa & Portugal)
  • Pysanky/Egg Painting (Ukraine)
